Neuromuscular Scoliosis/Child

Neuromuscular scoliosis is found in children with spinal curvature secondary to conditions such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and myelomeningocele (the most serious form of spina bifida in which the backbone and spinal canal do not close before birth). This particular condition is frequently progressive and can interfere significantly with good sitting posture. Since many children with neuromuscular scoliosis depend on a wheelchair for their mobility, sitting stability is an extremely important objective.

Neuromuscular scoliosis frequently occurs in children who are not ambulatory and depend on a wheelchair for mobility. This type of scoliosis usually causes poor sitting balance, with children using their hands to keep themselves in an upright position; and discomfort, especially when the scoliosis reaches such a degree that the rib cage rests on the pelvis. As it becomes increasingly difficult to sit, the child might spend more time recumbent, thereby increasing the risk of developing skin ulcers and other dermatological problems. In these situations, surgery can restore balance and do away with chronic discomfort. The result is usually a much happier child whose sitting balance is restored, and the reduction of respiratory, gastrointestinal and genitourinary infections.
